How We Clean and Service Porta Potties
What happens on a service visit, and how to keep units clean between visits
A porta potty is only as good as the last time it was serviced. Here’s what our crew does on a service visit, how often units get serviced, and what you can do to keep them in good shape between visits.
Most people only think about a porta potty when they open the door. By then, whether it’s clean comes down to two things: how well it was serviced and how long it’s been since. At Summit City Rental, servicing is most of what we do, on job sites, at parks and at multi-day events across Fort Wayne and Northeast Indiana. Here’s what that actually looks like.
What Happens on a Service Visit
Our service truck carries a vacuum tank for waste, a tank of fresh water and supplies. On each visit, the technician pumps out the holding tank completely, then cleans the inside of the unit: the seat, the urinal, the walls, the floor and the door handles, including the spots people touch most. The tank gets recharged with fresh water and deodorizer so odors stay down. Then the unit is restocked with toilet paper and hand sanitizer, and our tech checks that the door latch, the vent and the occupied indicator work. If a unit has a hand sink, the fresh water tank is refilled and the waste water emptied; hand wash stations get the same treatment along with fresh soap and paper towels.
Before any unit goes out on a new rental, it’s washed and inspected back at our yard in Woodburn, so you start with a clean unit every time.
How Often Units Get Serviced
For construction sites and other long-term rentals, units are typically serviced weekly. Bigger crews, hot weather and heavy use can call for more frequent service, and we’ll adjust the schedule if a unit is filling up too fast. For a one-day event, the unit is delivered clean and picked up afterward, so no service visit is needed. For festivals and events that run several days, we service between days so the units are ready for the next morning. See our festival and fair rentals for more on multi-day events.
If you’re not sure you have enough units, our free porta potty calculator can help. Too few units for the crowd fill up faster than any service schedule can keep up with.
Keeping Units Clean Between Visits
A few simple things make a real difference. Put units on level ground so the tank doesn’t tip and splash. Keep them out of direct sun when you can, which helps with odor in the summer. Add a hand wash station so people aren’t touching things with dirty hands. Ask your crew or guests not to throw trash, food, cups or diapers into the tank, which makes servicing harder and can block the pump. And if a unit is full, tipped or damaged, call us. We’d rather come out early than have you put up with a bad unit.
Want something that feels more like a regular bathroom? Restroom trailers have flushing toilets and running-water sinks, and they’re serviced and pumped on a schedule too.
